You know that sad feeling you get when a headache's coming on while watching a 3D movie and you remember that you can't actually take the glasses off for a few seconds of relief because the ghosted 2D image is even harder to watch? That could be a thing of the past as researchers from the University of California Santa Cruz have developed a new kind of 3D display that doesn't appear ghosted when you're not wearing those special glasses.
Traditional 3D projection systems use two overlaid images, one for each eye that's singled out by those glasses you have to wear. But this new system works its 2D/3D magic by projecting an additional third image that's a negative of the image destined for the right eye. So when you're not wearing glasses it cancels out the right eye image, leaving just the un-ghosted left. But when you are sporting those less-than-stylish specs, the third image is filtered out, so you can see the 3D effect as intended.
In its current state the new 2D/3D system isn't perfect, though. The technique leaves the 2D image lacking contrast, so to compensate the researchers had to increase the brightness in the left image compared to the right in 3D mode. But through experimentation they managed to find a good balance where the researchers claim the difference in brightness didn't take away from the experience. Now where was this technology two years ago when theaters could have really used it to help sell the 3D experience? Is this a case of too little, too late? [UCSC via Gizmag]

MINNEAPOLIS - Fire investigators are looking for the person or persons who they believe set nine separate fires in a two-hour span Thursday night into Friday morning.
The main victim of the arsons was a church known for its "Everyone is Welcome" philosophy.
The Community Covenant Church on Humbolt Avenue is considered a neighborhood treasure.
"I do not think that there is any other church in the country that is as racially mixed and really connected to doing the things that we are doing in the community," said Rick Harrin, Church member.
Oddly, the church garage was vandalized by an obscene racial slur, which Pastor Luke Swanson painted over before dawn. Swanson consoled his congregation on the fire damage to the sanctuary and smoke and water damage to the entire building. A grand piano was a total loss.
"Music is so central to our faith," said Swanson. "We have a song to sing and for someone to vandalize our church like that, we certainly are sad and our faith also tells us to pray for those who persecute us."
Sgt. Sean McKenna said the arsonist or arsonists broke a window in the church to gain access.
"At this time, I do not know if there was any additional burglary. My guess is that this fire was simply, at this time, an act of vandalism," said McKenna.
McKenna believed that the nine fires are all related. There are no suspects at this time.
"One of the beliefs that the fires may be related is perhaps the setting of the fires to the south is an attempt to draw attention away from here (the church), maybe toss us off the track of the investigation," McKenna said.
The other fires targeted trees and debris, a vehicle, a fence and several dumpsters.
McKenna appealed to the public to call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-723-2020 with any information.
Swanson said the regular Sunday services will go on in the park next to the church or in the Lincoln Prep School if it rains.

In the latest test, Kaspersky Internet Security (2013), Norton Internet Security (2013), and Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 rated AAA, the top rating.
Scoring Protection
Each product earns points for correctly detecting and preventing malware attacks, and loses points for failing to do so. Defending the system by completely preventing malware from launching earns three points. Neutralizing the attack after launch and fully reversing its effect is worth two points. Terminating the malware without fully cleaning up gets just one point. A product that fails to detect the malware or that tries and fails to prevent system compromise loses five points.
Researchers tested with 100 different real-world malware samples, so scores could range from 300 to negative 500. With 291 points, Norton edged out Kaspersky by a single point to take the top spot. At the bottom were Microsoft Security Essentials and McAfee Internet Security 2013, scoring 127 and 144 points respectively.
Looking at things another way, Bitdefender actually won this challenge, because it detected every attack and either defended or neutralized them all. Kaspersky and Norton missed a couple, but earned higher scores by fully defending against almost every detected threat.
False Positives
In addition to testing real-world defense against malware attack, the researchers also worked to verify that these security products correctly refrained from blocking legitimate programs, or reporting them as suspicious. Each product starts with a perfect 100 false positive points. Blocking a legitimate program costs anywhere from 0.1 point (for a very low impact program) to 5 points (for a very high impact program). The "fine" for reporting a legitimate program as suspicious is half that amount.
Microsoft and McAfee did much better in this test, both earning a perfect 100. With 75 points, ESET Smart Security 6 had the lowest score. Norton's 90 points put it second-lowest.
Overall Accuracy
Adding the scores for protection and false positives gives us the product's total accuracy, with a theoretical range from 400 points down to negative 1,000. All three of the AAA-rated products scored over 380 points. avast! Free Antivirus 7 rated AA, with 366 points. The other free antivirus tested, AVG Anti-Virus FREE 2013, earned a C rating, due more to poor protection than false positives. In between those two, ESET and Trend Micro Internet Security 2013 rated a single A.
As for McAfee and Microsoft, their stellar lack of false positives couldn't overcome their poor performance in the protection test. Neither received certification even at the C level, though Microsoft scored 100 points more than in the previous test by Dennis Technology Labs. That's a steady improvement by Microsoft, given that in the test before that it earned a below-zero score.
I'm highly impressed with this lab's testing methodology. I only wish they'd put a wider range of products to the test. If you'd like to dig deeper, the very detailed full test report is available on the Dennis Technology Labs website, along with parallel reports on SMB and Enterprise security products.

Fans of singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran greeted "The Orange Room" Singer decked out in the same bright, sunny shade to celebrate his concert on the TODAY plaza Friday morning.
As the 22-year-old Brit sang hits "Lego House," "The A Team," and ?You Need Me, I Don?t Need You," the crowd sang along with every word. It's no surprise they knew the songs so well. Many of those fans starting camping out on Wednesday for the big performance in New York.
"My nana always said if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere," Sheeran said as he looked on at the sea of orange. "I'm just overwhelmed by it."
Saturday night he'll see an even bigger crowd just outside the Big Apple as he opens for Taylor Swift at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It's just one stop on his ongoing tour with Swift, and so far, it's been a memorable experience for Sheeran.
"The best thing about being on the road in general is just playing every single night in front of people that are genuinely fans of your music," he told TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. "I think the best thing about being on the road with Taylor is she has a lot of days off, so I actually get to see America. I got to see the Empire State Building the other day. I'd never been there, so that was fun."
Check out the clips above to Sheeran's performances and to hear what else the singer had to say. See our favorite tweets and Instagrams using our hashtag #EdSheeranTODAY.

NEW YORK/HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia on Thursday introduced a new smartphone, the Lumia 1020, with a powerful 41-megapixel camera in its latest bid to catch up with rivals Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc.
Tech bloggers responded enthusiastically, saying the camera quality was the highest in the market. But analysts questioned whether it was enough to help Nokia, suffering a fall in cash reserves after years of poor sales, survive.
"The hardware's a beauty on this thing," said tech website Engadget after CEO Stephen Elop demonstrated features including "floating lens" technology that adjusts for camera shake and six lenses that help produce sharper images.
The Finnish mobile phone maker is pinning its hopes for a comeback in smartphones on Microsoft Corp's Windows Phone - an operating system that is struggling to compete with Google's popular Android system.
While regular mobile phones still account for the bulk of its shipments, smartphones are viewed as crucial for its long-term survival because of their higher margins and increasing demand for web access from mobile phones.
Jo Harlow, Nokia's executive vice president in charge of smart devices, said the growing popularity of photo and video sharing meant more consumers will want better cameras.
"Taking pictures is in the top three things people do with a smartphone. It's a relevant feature to be focused on," she told Reuters. "To stand out you have to differentiate."
The new Lumia's 41-megapixel count far exceeds those of the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, at 8 and 16 megapixels respectively. It is also higher than some compact cameras, although higher megapixels do not necessarily mean better photos as factors such as lens quality also affect the end result.
"The imaging capabilities here are extraordinary," said Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart.
But he added: "It's still a Windows Phone ... if somebody is looking for applications they're still going to look at iPhone."
MARKETING PUSH
The new Lumia, which use Windows software, will be sold through U.S. carrier AT&T Inc starting July 26 for $299.99 with a two-year contract, and will be available later in other markets including China, Nokia said.
Telefonica SA, a carrier partner in European and Latin American markets, will get a version of the device, Nokia said without giving any details.
Earlier Lumia models also won positive reviews from critics and technology blogs but have failed to halt a shift to Android phones. Android and Apple's iOS together account for over 90 percent of smartphone sales, according to research firm IDC.
One major handicap has been a lack of apps. Windows Phone has only 160,000 apps, while rivals offer about five times as many because developers prefer to make them for the higher-volume operating systems.
"Despite the quality of the device, I have some serious doubts about whether it will change Nokia's fortunes, and it risks becoming a niche product," said IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo.
He and other analysts have also said Nokia needs to step up advertising and promotion of its phones. Many have said telecom carrier partners, particularly in the United States, have failed to promote Nokia to their customers.
Elop said Nokia was pooling resources with AT&T and Microsoft to market the Lumia 1020, positive news for investors who have been worried about the company's lack of funds.
Nokia said last week that its net cash position at the end of the second quarter was between 3.7 billion euros and 4.2 billion euros ($4.7 billion and $5.4 billion), meaning it burned through as much as 800 million euros in the quarter.
"This is the first real glimmer of hope for Nokia's resurgence and the viability of the Windows ecosystem in smartphones ? provided Nokia, Microsoft, and their operator partners can convince consumers that this experience is indeed a leap forward," said Forrester Research analyst Charles Golvin. "That will be the real hard work."

Mediterranean Oil & Gas (LON:MOG) announced this morning that it has been asked to complete an 'Autorizzazione Integrata Ambientale' (AIA), an integrated environmental authorisation, for the Ombrina Mare project. The AIA would act as a precursor to the ministry considering the approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The AIM listed company says this new request goes against prior instructions which told the company the EIA could be completed without the need for an AIA at this time.
Mediterranean Oil & Gas are currently trading at 6.48 pence a share, down 12.14% on opening.
Rialto Energy (LON:RIA) announced this morning that in the period since 1400 hours (AWST) on 9 July 2013, wireline logging operations were completed at the Starfish-1 oil exploration well.
Rob Shepherd, Managing Director of Rialto said: "Whilst the preliminary results from the Starfish-1 well are disappointing, it is too early to draw any definitive conclusions from what was essentially the first well in a block covering a gross area of 2,000 km2. As we have highlighted prior to and when the well spudded, it was designed as a play-opener with a 20% chance of success, and we also note Ophir Energy, the Operator, commented in their release on 10 July 2013 that their primary reason for farming-in to this acreage was the play potential outboard of the Starfish prospect. The results of this well will provide valuable geological information as the partners now look to analyse the further prospectivity of the licence area.
Additionally, as we noted in our announcement on 18 June 2013, we had made an initial drawdown on the facility provided by Vitol s.a. to meet our share of the June cash call and a drawdown to meet the subsequent cash call meant that our financial exposure to the Starfish well was minimized."
Rialto Energy are currently trading at 1.03 pence a share, down 6.09% on opening.

While tea is an integral part of British culture ? the UK consumes 165 million cups each day ? the majority is drunk with milk and made with low-grade leaves.
However, London?s Lalani & Co is seeking to change the way tea is treated by working closely with the capital?s leading hotels and restaurants when it comes to sourcing the best possible teas, and offering advice on how to serve it.
Set up by three brothers, the company has already encouraged a number of London outlets to champion tea consumption, as well as work with Riedel to select a suitable glass for drinking tea.
?It?s a really exciting time for tea now,? said Nadeem Lalani, co-founder of the company, in a discussion with the drinks business at Sake no Hana, where Lalani sencha teas are served in Riedel?Pinot and Cabernet ?O??glasses?alongside sushi.
Continuing, he noted the emergence of ?a contemporary British tea culture? stemming from a fusion of wine and tea appreciation in which tea is sipped slowly from stemware and enjoyed with a range of foods in leading London outlets.
As an example of this new trend, Nadeem cites Brown?s Hotel, which is now serving a range of Lalani teas in Riedel ?O? glasses selected by Jameel Lalani, Riedel and a panel of sommeliers,?alongside handmade tea ware pieces designed by British ceramic artist Billy Lloyd.
Nevertheless, Nadeem also records the prevalence of poor quality teas in top London hotels. ?It?s true that lots of hotels are using catering grade tea bags and charging a huge mark-up,? he told db.
In his many meetings with leading restaurants and hotels he notes either an enthusiastic response or a complete lack of interest when it comes to elevating the quality of tea on offer.
?Some chefs and sommeliers understand that tea is a provenance-based, seasonal product, but then, with others, we?re asked, ?what?s the price?? and that?s the end of the discussion.?
Establishments that have listed Lalani leaf teas aside from Brown?s Hotel include restaurants Hibiscus, Hakkasan, Sake no Hana, Gauthier Soho, Bubbledogs and new Peruvian restaurant Coya, as well as?Trishna, Zuma, The Modern Pantry and Kempinski.
?The market is changing and the public are crying out for a more artisan dining experience and London is the capital of tea consumption, so now is the right time for hotels and restaurants to be introducing seasonal tea libraries,? remarked Nadeem.
In terms of the benefits of tea drinking, he stressed that tea is tax and duty free, packed with anti-oxidants, and, after a tea flight with food, the diner is left feeling alert, but not wired.
?Tea is a contemplative drink, it is not a fix like coffee, and you should drink tea as slowly as wine,? he commented.
