Police: Man forced 13-year-old into prostitution, tattooed her eyelids

By NBCMiami.com

A 13-year-old girl, who was forced to work as a prostitute, was branded with eyelid tattoos that read ?Suave? and ?House,? an arrest report said.

The girl told authorities she met Roman C. Thomas III, 25, at USA Flea Market in Liberty City, a Miami neighborhood, on March 12. After they talked for a while, she agreed to go with Thomas to his Miami Shores motel, where he told her that he was pimp, and that he wanted her to prostitute herself, the Miami Police arrest report said.

At the motel, the girl met Shanteria Sanders, 23, who has a tattoo of the word ?Suave? across her chest, authorities said.

Thomas and Sanders coerced the girl to become a prostitute, and eight sexually provocative photographs were taken of the girl and used in an ad on Backpage.com, the report said.

Thomas, who was arrested along with Sanders on March 18, described her as a ?new girl? and called her ?Sparkle,? the report said.

She told authorities Thomas told her to charge men $50 for 15 minutes of sex, $70 for 30 minutes, and $100 for an hour, the report said.

He gave her condoms and taught her how to talk to the men, authorities said. He also told her where to hide the money in the motel room, and he waited outside with Sanders while the act was performed, the report said.

The girl said Thomas beat her when he found less money than he anticipated, according to authorities.

? ?he placed duct tape on her mouth and threatened to kill her if she tried to leave him,? the report read.

Besides tattooing her eyelids, he gave the girl alcohol, marijuana and other drugs, police said.

The girl said although she never had sex with either Thomas or Sanders, the two of them had sex while she was in the motel room, and invited her to participate, the report said. Sanders then told Thomas to leave the girl alone, the report said.

Both Thomas and Sanders face charges including human trafficking, false imprisonment, lewd and lascivious exhibition and delivery of a controlled substance to a child under 18. They both deny the allegations.

BracketRacket: A quiz, a thought and Peeps

Welcome to BracketRacket, your one-stop shopping place for all things NCAA.

For our first Sweet 16 edition, we've got a geography quiz by Shockers and Explorers, a coach in rarified air, a former Ohio attorney general rooting for Michigan State and Jim Larranaga's thought for the day. All that and some Bracket Bits that include all of Dunk City's postseason dunks and, in honor of Easter, Peeps.

___

GEOGRAPHY QUIZ

Who says academics go by the wayside during the NCAA tournament?

La Salle and Wichita State took a geography quiz at the West Regional in Los Angeles, and the Shockers passed. Belying their name, the Explorers need to brush up a little.

Here's an excerpt of how it went from AP Sports Writer Beth Harris:

Question: Where is La Salle located?

Answer: "Philly, right? I believe it's Philly," Shockers guard Malcolm Armstead said.

Correct.

Question: Where is Wichita State located?

Answer: "What state is it in?" asked La Salle guard Ramon Galloway.

And it went downhill from there.

"I saw a store down here called Which Wich," Explorers guard Tyrone Garland offered, not-so-helpfully naming a national sandwich chain.

Guard Tyreek Duren pitched in: "Steve Zack said we passed the Wichita exit when we were going to the airport. He pointed it out and said, 'That's who we play.'"

Informed of their opponent's confusion, Shockers forward Cleanthony Early, of Middletown, N.Y., admitted he was initially stumped, too.

"I didn't know where Wichita was either before I went there," he said. "I had to do my research. When I first heard of it, I couldn't even pronounce it correctly."

After losing to the Shockers in the Sweet 16, the Explorers probably know a little bit more about Wichita as well.

___

ONE IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS

Forgive Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks if they have a bit of an inferiority complex this weekend.

And no, this isn't a gripe about the selection committee's seeding.

The Ducks, being covered at the Sweet 16 by AP National Writer Nancy Armour, are in the Midwest Regional semifinals with a veritable Who's Who of college hoops.

Their opponent, Louisville, is a two-time national champion and was in the Final Four last year. Cardinals coach Rick Pitino is a surefire Hall of Famer, with two NCAA titles, 660 wins ? and counting ? and a 49-18 record in March alone.

There's also Duke, which won its fourth national title three years ago and whose coach, Mike Krzyzewski, has more wins than anyone else in Division I. (Coach K has a side gig, too, leading the U.S. men to gold medals at the last two Olympics.)

And don't forget Michigan State, which may as well include the Final Four on its schedule for as many times as Tom Izzo and the Spartans wind up there.

"Fortunately, it's our team going out there," Altman said.

Altman is no slouch, either. Oregon is the third school he's taken to the NCAA tournament, and the Ducks have had 20-win seasons in each of his three years as head coach. But Oregon is not exactly a tournament mainstay; this is the Ducks' first appearance since 2008, and their first trip to the regional semifinals since 2007.

"All three of those programs, because of their coaches, have great records, great traditions," Altman said. "We're trying to build a tradition. We're trying to build something that consistently competes year in and year out. That's a big challenge for us."

___

FORCED TO CHOOSE

Richard Cordray is the former Ohio attorney general and lives in Columbus, so he roots for Ohio State football.

He also went to Michigan State at the same time as Magic Johnson, so he pulls for Spartans basketball.

That left the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau with a dilemma while filling out his NCAA tournament bracket. But when it came down to picking a team ? he has the Buckeyes and Spartans reaching the Final Four ? Cordray went with Michigan State.

"I always go with my heart," Cordray told AP Business Writer Christina Rexrode.

Cordray's roommate at Michigan State had a few classes with Magic and he saw firsthand the impact the oversized and gregarious point guard had on the school.

"It was really exciting and fun to watch," Cordray said. "Of course he left after two years and went on to fame and fortune. The rest of us toiled for four years finding ourselves. He's a great personality, he just glows and picks everybody up around him."

___

HOLD THAT THOUGHT

During his Final Four run with George Mason, Miami coach Jim Larranaga became known for giving a "thought for the day" to his players.

He's carried on the practice with the Hurricanes, although it's hard to tell what effect it has, as AP Sports Writer Joseph White in Washington, D.C., found out.

"Every day he gives us a thought, and something that sticks with us, and it's not something that's complicated," forward Julian Gamble said, "just something that's very simple and just to let you know that we have to enjoy these moments."

If that's the case, Gamble was asked, can he name a favorite "thought for the day?"

"Can't think of one. Know one?" he said, turning to teammate Shane Larkin.

"I can't think of one," Larkin said.

But Gamble made a nice recovery, saying: "The one for this game is keep 'em out of the paint and block out on rebounds, so that will be my favorite one for now."

Larranaga will have to come up with a new thought, one that will last the entire offseason, after the Hurricanes lost to Marquette in the Sweet 16.

Hopefully, it'll be one that sticks.

STAT OF THE DAY

Dunk City is rattling the search engines along with rims.

According to Yahoo! Search, Florida Gulf Coast University is dominating as the most-searched team after becoming the first No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16.

Searches for the Eagles spiked 3,367 percent this week and FGCU has gotten more searches than North Korea, Lindsay Lohan and Justin Bieber.

FGCU has been searched more than any of the remaining teams in the tournament, ahead of better-known schools such as Syracuse, Duke, Michigan and Kansas.

Facebook to hold Android event Thursday

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook has invited journalists to the unveiling of what it calls its "new home on Android."

Next Thursday's event will take place at the company's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters. Facebook isn't providing further details. There has been speculation about a "Facebook phone" for a few years. Facebook has long said it would not make its own phone. Rather, such a phone would likely integrate Facebook deeper into the phone's software.

Citing unnamed sources, the tech blog TechCrunch says Facebook Inc. will launch a modified version of Android that embeds Facebook deeply into the operating system, on a phone made by HTC Corp.

A Facebook rival, Google Inc., makes the Android software that Facebook and HTC would be using under that scenario. Google makes the software available on an open-source basis, meaning others including rivals are free to adapt it for their needs. Amazon.com Inc. does just that in modifying Android to run its Kindle tablet computers.

More than half of Facebook's 1.06 billion monthly users access it on a mobile device. A deeper integration would help Facebook with its mobile aspirations.

Biological transistor enables computing within living cells

Mar. 28, 2013 ? When Charles Babbage prototyped the first computing machine in the 19th century, he imagined using mechanical gears and latches to control information. ENIAC, the first modern computer developed in the 1940s, used vacuum tubes and electricity. Today, computers use transistors made from highly engineered semiconducting materials to carry out their logical operations.

And now a team of Stanford University bioengineers has taken computing beyond mechanics and electronics into the living realm of biology. In a paper to be published March 28 in Science, the team details a biological transistor made from genetic material -- DNA and RNA -- in place of gears or electrons. The team calls its biological transistor the "transcriptor."

"Transcriptors are the key component behind amplifying genetic logic -- akin to the transistor and electronics," said Jerome Bonnet, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar in bioengineering and the paper's lead author.

The creation of the transcriptor allows engineers to compute inside living cells to record, for instance, when cells have been exposed to certain external stimuli or environmental factors, or even to turn on and off cell reproduction as needed.

"Biological computers can be used to study and reprogram living systems, monitor environments and improve cellular therapeutics," said Drew Endy, PhD, assistant professor of bioengineering and the paper's senior author.

The biological computer

In electronics, a transistor controls the flow of electrons along a circuit. Similarly, in biologics, a transcriptor controls the flow of a specific protein, RNA polymerase, as it travels along a strand of DNA.

"We have repurposed a group of natural proteins, called integrases, to realize digital control over the flow of RNA polymerase along DNA, which in turn allowed us to engineer amplifying genetic logic," said Endy.

Using transcriptors, the team has created what are known in electrical engineering as logic gates that can derive true-false answers to virtually any biochemical question that might be posed within a cell.

They refer to their transcriptor-based logic gates as "Boolean Integrase Logic," or "BIL gates" for short.

Transcriptor-based gates alone do not constitute a computer, but they are the third and final component of a biological computer that could operate within individual living cells.

Despite their outward differences, all modern computers, from ENIAC to Apple, share three basic functions: storing, transmitting and performing logical operations on information.

Last year, Endy and his team made news in delivering the other two core components of a fully functional genetic computer. The first was a type of rewritable digital data storage within DNA. They also developed a mechanism for transmitting genetic information from cell to cell, a sort of biological Internet.

It all adds up to creating a computer inside a living cell.

Boole's gold

Digital logic is often referred to as "Boolean logic," after George Boole, the mathematician who proposed the system in 1854. Today, Boolean logic typically takes the form of 1s and 0s within a computer. Answer true, gate open; answer false, gate closed. Open. Closed. On. Off. 1. 0. It's that basic. But it turns out that with just these simple tools and ways of thinking you can accomplish quite a lot.

"AND" and "OR" are just two of the most basic Boolean logic gates. An "AND" gate, for instance, is "true" when both of its inputs are true -- when "a" and "b" are true. An "OR" gate, on the other hand, is true when either or both of its inputs are true.

In a biological setting, the possibilities for logic are as limitless as in electronics, Bonnet explained. "You could test whether a given cell had been exposed to any number of external stimuli -- the presence of glucose and caffeine, for instance. BIL gates would allow you to make that determination and to store that information so you could easily identify those which had been exposed and which had not," he said.

By the same token, you could tell the cell to start or stop reproducing if certain factors were present. And, by coupling BIL gates with the team's biological Internet, it is possible to communicate genetic information from cell to cell to orchestrate the behavior of a group of cells.

"The potential applications are limited only by the imagination of the researcher," said co-author Monica Ortiz, a PhD candidate in bioengineering who demonstrated autonomous cell-to-cell communication of DNA encoding various BIL gates.

Building a transcriptor

To create transcriptors and logic gates, the team used carefully calibrated combinations of enzymes -- the integrases mentioned earlier -- that control the flow of RNA polymerase along strands of DNA. If this were electronics, DNA is the wire and RNA polymerase is the electron.

"The choice of enzymes is important," Bonnet said. "We have been careful to select enzymes that function in bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, so that bio-computers can be engineered within a variety of organisms."

On the technical side, the transcriptor achieves a key similarity between the biological transistor and its semiconducting cousin: signal amplification.

With transcriptors, a very small change in the expression of an integrase can create a very large change in the expression of any two other genes.

To understand the importance of amplification, consider that the transistor was first conceived as a way to replace expensive, inefficient and unreliable vacuum tubes in the amplification of telephone signals for transcontinental phone calls. Electrical signals traveling along wires get weaker the farther they travel, but if you put an amplifier every so often along the way, you can relay the signal across a great distance. The same would hold in biological systems as signals get transmitted among a group of cells.

"It is a concept similar to transistor radios," said Pakpoom Subsoontorn, a PhD candidate in bioengineering and co-author of the study who developed theoretical models to predict the behavior of BIL gates. "Relatively weak radio waves traveling through the air can get amplified into sound."

Public-domain biotechnology

To bring the age of the biological computer to a much speedier reality, Endy and his team have contributed all of BIL gates to the public domain so that others can immediately harness and improve upon the tools.

"Most of biotechnology has not yet been imagined, let alone made true. By freely sharing important basic tools everyone can work better together," Bonnet said.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Not too long after the Samsung Galaxy S 4 was announced, we started hearing whispers of a "miniature" version of the device -- which makes sense, given the Galaxy S III had a smaller sidekick of its own. Today, however, Bloomberg reported the unannounced device is indeed coming soon after the flagship makes its appearance at the end of April. If it follows a similar pattern to its bite-sized predecessor, it likely will be offered in Europe as a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy S 4. The device is rumored to offer a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, a 4.3-inch display and 8MP camera. Sadly, no official details were given, but we've reached out to Samsung officials for comment and will update when we receive word.

Nexus 4 gets subtle design tweaks, nubbin to write home about

Nexus 4 gets mystery design tweaks, still no LTE

If the one thing you wanted from your Nexus 4 was LTE (we mean proper support), then still no joy. That said, some recent modifications suggest that LG and Google are still working to improve it in other -- albeit utilitarian -- ways. Spotted by German site MobiFlip, was the addition of a small protuberance at the base of the rear, and a difference in the aperture of the camera hole. It's suggested that the former might exist to help project sound from the rear speakers while the phone rests on a table, or to prevent that smooth, glass back from scratches. The camera tweak, however seems less clear, and possibly less functional in its existence. So, if you have one of the newer designs, let us know when and where you got it. If you don't, then just think of yours as a limited edition.

UK brings spies, police, business together to launch cyber threat center

Since spies tend to be equal opportunity hackers, the UK is forging an anti-cyber threat center that'll let spook agencies like GCHQ and MI5 share intelligence with police and businesses. It started last year as a pilot program called "Project Auburn," and will now be formally known as CISP (the Cyber Security Information Sharing Partnership). So far, 160 firms have joined the center, which hopes to share technical information, attack vectors and prevention methods. The UK government said it was necessary to bring industry into the picture since they're "by far the biggest victims in terms of espionage and intellectual property theft, with losses to the UK economy running into the billions of pounds annually." Some likely needn't check the mail too closely for an RSVP, however.

Victoria Leavitt, Ph.D., of Kessler Foundation was awarded a $619,618 five-year grant from the National MS Society to study predictors of memory decline in MS

West Orange, NJ. March 27, 2013. The National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society awarded Victoria Leavitt, PhD, a $619,618 grant to study predictors of memory decline in MS. Dr. Leavitt, a scientist in Neuropsychology and Neuroscience Research at Kessler Foundation, will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate a brain marker with predictive value for memory decline. This novel five-year study is titled "Resting State Functional Connectivity as a Predictor of Memory Decline in Multiple Sclerosis." (NMSS grant #389)

Memory impairment is a problem for about 50% of all persons with MS, leading to difficulty maintaining employment, as well as problems managing everyday life functions. Memory impairment is also associated with fatigue, depression, and stress among people with MS.

"Finding the way to predict memory decline is an essential first step towards eventually finding the way to prevent memory decline in persons with MS." said John DeLuca, PhD, VP of Research & Training. "At present, clinicians have no tool for identifying patients at risk. The goal of this study is to evaluate a brain marker that will provide a way to identify which patients may benefit from early behavioral and pharmacological interventions."

"We know that such interventions stand to be more effective if implemented at an early stage," explained Dr. Leavitt." Our pilot data reveal a unique neural 'signature' in the brain, detectable with functional neuroimaging, which may help us identify who is at-risk for memory decline at an early point in disease progression. As such, this 'signature' could be used as a marker for memory decline. Most importantly, this marker is easily and non-invasively obtained in the course of standard brain scans that most people with MS have regularly."

During this five-year study, patients with MS will undergo baseline fMRI and memory evaluation, and followup three years later to assess the predictive value of the brain marker.

###

Dr. Leavitt works closely with Dr. DeLuca and Nancy Chiaravalloti, PhD, director of Neuropsychology, Neuroscience & TBI Research at Kessler Foundation, both of whom are experts in cognitive rehabilitation research. Drs. Leavitt, DeLuca and Chiaravalloti have faculty appointments in the department of physical medicine & rehabilitation at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.

Cypriot youth protest as banks stay shut

By Michele Kambas and Costas Pitas

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cypriots vented anger in the streets on Tuesday and were desperate to learn what would happen to their savings, with the government yet to reveal details of controls it will impose to prevent a run when banks reopen after a painful bailout.

A special administrator was appointed to run the country's biggest bank, which will take over accounts from the second biggest bank as part of the restructuring package designed to bail out and rein in the oversized financial sector.

Cyprus's banks were ordered to remain closed until Thursday, and even then will operate under as-yet-undisclosed capital controls imposed to prevent depositors from emptying the vaults.

The Central Bank governor said the controls would be "loose" and would apply to all banks in the country. The restrictions would be "temporary" but he would not say what form they would take or how long they would last. Earlier, the finance minister said they could be in place for weeks.

Cyprus had faced bankruptcy and potential ejection from the European single currency without a rescue deal with international lending bodies. Now that the deal has been struck, it faces job losses and economic contraction.

Reuters journalists estimated up to 3,000 high school students protested outside parliament, the first major expression of popular anger after Cyprus agreed the 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout with the European Union.

"They've just gotten rid of all our dreams, everything we've worked for, everything we've achieved up until now, what our parents have achieved," said a student who gave his name as Thomas.

Outside the central bank, about 200 employees of the country's biggest commercial bank, the Bank of Cyprus, demanded the resignation of the central bank governor, Panicos Demetriades, chanting "Hands off Cyprus" and "Disgrace".

"We are scared. We were also so proud of the Bank of Cyprus. We worked with a lot of love, not just for the money," said a Bank of Cyprus worker who gave her name as Anthoulla.

RESIGNATION

Under the bailout, the second largest bank, Cyprus Popular Bank, is to be shut down and its accounts of under 100,000 euros combined with those of the Bank of Cyprus. Accounts of more than 100,000 euros at both banks will be frozen, with depositors, many of them rich foreigners, likely to lose much of their investments.

Dinos Christofides, an accountant and banker, told Reuters he had been named administrator to run the Bank of Cyprus: "It means that from now until further notice I will be running the bank. It could be short term ... or it could be longer."

Bank of Cyprus chairman Andreas Artemis offered to resign on Tuesday, a source at the bank said. His fate was not clear after the bank declined to accept his resignation.

After returning from last-ditch negotiations in Brussels, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said late on Monday that the rescue plan agreed was "painful" but essential.

European leaders said the deal averted a chaotic national bankruptcy that might have forced Cyprus from the euro.

A Cyprus exit from the euro would be "disastrous, politically and economically" and was not to be contemplated, Finance Minister Michael Sarris said.

By protecting state guaranteed deposits of up to 100,000 euros, the bailout reversed a previous deal that would have imposed a levy on small depositors as well as big ones, which had infuriated Cypriots and was vetoed by parliament. Sarris said big depositors could face loses of around 40 percent.

Many Cypriots say they do not feel reassured by the new deal, however, and are expected to besiege banks as soon as they reopen after a shutdown that began over a week ago.

Reversing a previous decision to start reopening at least some banks on Tuesday, the central bank said late on Monday that all banks would now stay shut for two more days to ensure the "smooth functioning of the whole banking system".

TEMPORARY MEASURE

Little is known about the restrictions on transactions that Anastasiades said the central bank would impose, but he told Cypriots: "I want to assure you that this will be a very temporary measure that will gradually be relaxed."

Such controls are at odds with the European Union's ideals of a common market but the government is anxious to prevent any panic that would cause even more disruption to the economy.

The central bank has imposed a 100-euro daily limit on withdrawals from cash machines at the two biggest banks.

Without an agreement by the end of Monday, Cyprus risked becoming the first country to be pushed out of the European single currency - a fate Germany and other northern creditors seemed willing to inflict.

BUSINESS LIFE

The closure of the banks for more than a week has hurt business. Andreas Hadjiadamou, president of the Cyprus Supermarkets Association, said: "It's had a huge effect on the market. Consumers' psychology has hit the floor."

"If they (the banks) don't open on Thursday we could see supply problems as well as delays in salary payments."

Maria Benaki, who runs a family silverware business on Nicosia's biggest shopping street, said she hasn't had a customer in days.

"The situation is dire. I don't understand why we bother coming into work at all to be honest," she said. "What will happen at the end of the month when I need to pay my bills?"

Meteorites reveal the secrets of last month's Russian fireball

Shards of meteorite, remnants of the fireball that streaked across Russia's skies on February 15, are giving scientists clues to the composition and origin of the space rock.

By Leonard David,?Space.com / March 21, 2013

A meteor streaked across the sky of Russia?s Ural Mountains on Friday morning, Feb. 15, causing sharp explosions injuring over 100 people, including many hurt by broken glass. Scientists have recovered broken fragments of the superbolide and are examining them for clues to its origin.

Based on the meteorite analysis, researchers have determined that last month's meteor explosion in Russia ? which scientists call a superbolide ? produced a shock wave that reached the ground. That shock shattered windows and injured some 1,500 people due to flying glass.

The blast also created a shower of stony meteorites that fell to Earth in an impact region more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) long.

Thinly sliced meteorites

Some of the Chelyabinsk meteorite samples have made their way to planetary scientist Larry Taylor, director of the Planetary Geosciences Institute at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, who obtained the superbolide samples with the help of Russian colleagues.?

"I got three pieces that were completely coated with black fusion crust. The total of them is less than 10 grams," Taylor told SPACE.com here at the 44th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

Initially, the meteorite specimens were polished and thinly sliced for a detailed inspection under a petrographic microscope. The device is a type of optical microscope used in petrology and optical mineralogy that scientists are employing to identify rocks and minerals within the thin meteorite slices.

The small samples will undergo further scrutiny over the next few months, Taylor said.

"We've just started to skim the top of it," he added.

Tapping into superbolide secrets

Taylor and his associates are now deciding the best tactics to further reveal what stories the specimens have to tell.

"The magnitude of the explosion led a whole lot of us to believe that it must have been a very volatile-rich meteor that was coming in ? because it exploded so vigorously," Taylor said. Volatile materials are those that evaporate easily. ?In fact, everything we found so far points to an ordinary chondrite."

About 90 percent of stony meteorites are classified as ordinary chondrites, space rocks that are lacking in volatile materials.

"It is ordinary because it's common," Taylor said. "But it is special because it contains such a wide array of things ? a whole menagerie of things all in one."?

Well folks, the results are finally in - I have done the unthinkable by completing my 2012 personal/business tax return 4 times!?

Ohhhh the horror, right?!!?

Why on Earth Would I Do My Taxes 4 Times?

I think we could agree that for most people, doing one's taxes would not exactly be considered "fun," and definitely not something that you would want to subject yourself to 4 times over in one year!

However, my purposes for going through my taxes 4 times were two-fold:

So, let's get in to the results I saw by doing my taxes these four times and what I learned in the process!

My 2012 Tax Return Results Using TurboTax

As I mentioned in my comparison post of the three big players in the online tax preparation community, TurboTax is both the most established/well-known and also by far the most expensive option on the market. In my opinion, they also ranked last in ease of use because it is very confusing to determine when you actually need to upgrade to complete your taxes or if they are just trying to upsell you for the sake of making more money.

Nevertheless, I was able to get through their online system pretty well when I calculated my 2012 tax return in TurboTax. Below is a summary of my experience:

  • Since I had business/self-employed income in 2012, I had to upgrade to the $75 Home & Business version of their software.?
  • I was prompted to enter my relevant expenses for a home office deduction.
  • They also prompted me to take a depreciation expense for my home office as well.
  • It was very hard to tell where I should enter my contributions to my pre-tax Self Employed 401k retirement account (results in tax deduction for current tax year).?
  • After entering all of my numbers, it resulted in the following return amounts:
    • $150 Federal Income Tax Refund.
    • Owed $352 in additional state taxes to the state of Virginia.

My 2012 Tax Return Results Using H&R Block

In my overall comparison of the popular online tax prep platforms, H&R Block was a very respectable option that featured middle-of-the-road pricing. In my opinion, it was the most straight-forward, easiest to use, and least confusing platform.

Below is a summary of my experience when I entered my 2012 tax return numbers in to H&R Block:

  • As was the case with TurboTax, since I had business/self-employed income in 2012,?I had to upgrade to the $50 Premium (most expensive) version of their software.?
  • For some reason that I could never figure out, the H&R Block system said that I could only contribute $4195 to my Roth IRA for 2012 (lower than the maximum contribution of $5000).?
    • I'm not sure why it stated this since I had made at least $5000 in income in 2012 and was below the maximum Roth IRA income limits.
  • After entering all of my numbers, it resulted in the following return amount:
    • $802 Federal Income Tax Refund.
    • It did not calculate my expected state income tax return/owed numbers.?

My 2012 Tax Return Results Using Tax Act

As I concluded in my comparison post of TurboTax, H&R Block, and Tax Act, I thought that?Tax Act?was the best overall value?because it is pretty easy to use and gives you all of the same?functionality?as TurboTax and H&R Block, but at 1/4-1/5 the cost!?

You can get their Deluxe edition along with one state tax filing for only $19!! Pretty awesome in my book for doing your yearly taxes!?

Below is a summary of my experience when I entered my 2012 tax return numbers in to Tax Act:
  • As was the case with the other two online platforms, since I had business/self-employed income in 2012,?I had to upgrade to the Deluxe version of their software. However, it is only $19 and includes a state tax filing, so it's hardly anything in the grand scheme of things! ?
  • I was prompted to enter my relevant expenses for a home office deduction.
  • They also prompted me to take a depreciation expense for my home office as well.
  • As was the case with H&R Block, for some reason that I could never figure out, the Tax Act system said that I could only contribute a certain amount (I forgot to write down the exact number) to my Roth IRA for 2012 (lower than the maximum contribution of $5000).?
    • I'm not sure why it stated this since I had made at least $5000 in income in 2012 and was below the maximum Roth IRA income limits.
  • After entering all of my numbers, it resulted in the following return amounts:
    • $972 Federal Income Tax Refund.
    • Owed $35 in additional state taxes to the state of Virginia.

I was pretty shocked at this result.?

Not only is Tax Act the cheapest of the three online tax preparation options by far, but it also resulted in me getting the most money back from the IRS / owing the least amount of money to the State of Virginia! I love it!

My 2012 Tax Return Results Using a Certified Public Accountant

Because I do have self-employment income, I have used an accountant to file my taxes since I graduated from college. I have done this in part because I use the same accountant that my Dad used for his self-employed business tax return, and since they charged him so much, they would do my taxes more or less for free.

However, since my Dad is now being paid as a regular employee, I no longer have this free service, and had to pay $200 for the accountant to do my taxes this year. Not too bad at all, but not free! Whether or not I will continue to utilize an accountant for my 2013 taxes will be the subject of a separate post all-together (on the way soon!).

Below is a brief summary of my experience of doing my taxes with the help of the CPA (I'll describe in more detail in a future post):

  • I was prompted to enter my relevant expenses for a home office deduction.
  • They did not prompt me to take a depreciation expense for my home office as well.
  • After receiving my return from the accountant after 1 month of waiting and a $200 fee, it resulted in the following return amounts:
    • $990 Federal Income Tax Refund.
    • Owed $23 in additional state taxes to the state of Virginia.

Conclusions

In reviewing all of the numbers above, we can make the following conclusions:
  • Assuming of course that I used the platform correctly (hopefully I did!), using TurboTax would have been an extremely costly mistake.?
    • It would have resulted in a loss of $1139 vs. using Tax Act. Crazy!
  • As is the case with their platform pricing, H&R Block again represents the "middle-of-the-road" return amount with a federal income tax refund of $802. Not too bad!
  • As I mentioned above, Tax Act, along with offering the lowest fees, resulted in me getting the most money back from the IRS / owing the least amount of money to the State of Virginia of all three online tax prep options.?
  • Looking solely at the federal return and state taxes owed numbers, I got a $30 net gain/improvement in using a CPA over the best online tax preparation option, Tax Act.?
    • However, this does not take in to consideration the $200 fee I had to pay the CPA and $19 fee to use Tax Act.?
    • If the fees of using Tax Act vs. a CPA are considered, the $30 improvement shown above turns in to a loss of $151 by using a CPA over Tax Act.?

So, purely from a bottom-line numbers perspective, Tax Act delivers the highest value.

However, there are some other non-numerical considerations that makes the Tax Act vs. CPA usage more complicated (and hence will be the subject of the future post described above). For example, you get a nice level of assurance when you use a CPA that your taxes are done correctly. They also reduce the amount of work you have to do, along with me as a business owner, being able to bounce questions off of them throughout the year. In addition, they calculated and prepared my 2013 estimated tax payment stubs and numbers as well, so that is a nice service!

How about you all? How did you file your taxes this past year - an online tax prep platform, through an accountant, or filing out the forms directly?

In general, do you feel the guidance provided by an accountant is worth the fees required for their services?

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? Former President Pervez Musharraf returned home Sunday hoping to make a political comeback despite Taliban death threats and looming arrest warrants. But judging by the lackluster crowd at the airport to greet him, his biggest challenge could be his waning popularity.

His return comes as Pakistan is poised to transition from one democratically elected government to another ? a first for a country that has experienced three coups since its 1947 inception. After years on the margins of Pakistani politics, Musharraf is seeking to rebuild his image, hoping to capitalize on an electorate frustrated with five years of rising inflation, rolling blackouts and security problems.

Musharraf, a four-star general who was chief of the army, took power in a 1999 coup and his military-led regime steered the country for nearly a decade until he was forced to step down in 2008 as president. Confronted with mounting criticism and widespread protests after he tried to dismiss a popular chief justice, he left facing impeachment by the newly elected parliament.

He later left the country and has been living between London and Dubai ever since.

The former Pakistani strongman had promised to return to his homeland many times before. He finally followed through, boarding a plane in Dubai with supporters and journalists and flying to the southern port metropolis of Karachi, the largest city in the nation.

Stepping out of the terminal, surrounded by police and supporters, he portrayed himself as a savior seeking to return the country to the prosperity and stability that supporters say marked his presidency.

"I have come back for you. I want you to get back the Pakistan that I had left when we used to feel proud in ourselves," he said.

Musharraf represents a polarizing force that could further complicate Pakistan's attempt to hold parliamentary elections on May 11. The country passed another milestone Sunday when the election commission appointed a caretaker prime minister to run the government ahead of elections, a step that is designed to promote electoral independence.

Musharraf's supporters, including elements of the military and members of Pakistan's influential expatriate communities, consider him a strong leader whose voice could help stabilize the country. Nostalgia for Musharraf's days in power was evident among members of the crowd who turned out to see him at the airport.

"At that time, we had employment. We had jobs. There was peace. It was 100,000 times better than today," said Muhammed Iqbal from Karachi.

Musharraf is fondly remembered by many people in this city of 18 million people where he heavily backed the Muttahida Quami Movement ? the city's dominant political party.

But Musharraf's welcoming party, estimated at between 1,000 and 2,000, was small compared with the hundreds of thousands of people who thronged this same terminal when Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan or the tens of thousands who turned out Saturday night for a rally in Lahore for cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan.

Supporters threw rose petals and enthusiastically waved flags emblazoned with pictures of Musharraf and Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan, but their energy did not mask their numbers.

"If he claims nationwide support, that would be a joke," said Rasul Bakhsh Rais, from the Lahore University of Management Sciences. "I have never seen such a misplaced optimism about oneself."

Musharraf was whisked out of the airport inside an armored vehicle, surrounded by a phalanx of police and paramilitary security forces. It was a reminder of the security threats Musharraf faces.

The former general angered many militants with his decision in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to back the U.S. in its invasion of Afghanistan and cut off ties with the Taliban. Militants as well as many other Pakistanis saw him as carrying out the American agenda in Pakistan.

Militants were further infuriated with Musharraf when he decided in 2007 to raid a mosque in Islamabad that had become a center for militants opposed to the U.S. Pakistani officials said 102 people, mostly supporters of the mosque, died in the week-long operation.

The Pakistan Taliban vowed to kill him in a video released on Saturday. One of the featured speakers in the video ? former Pakistan Air Force officer Adnan Rashid ? was convicted of helping plot an assassination attempt against Musharraf back in 2003 when a suicide bomber tried to ram his vehicle. Rashid was imprisoned, but he escaped during a jail break orchestrated by the Taliban. In the video, he said Musharraf should surrender himself to the Taliban or prepare to be hit again.

"The mujahedeen of Islam have prepared a death squad to send Pervez Musharraf to hell," Rashid warned.

A serious security threat prompted the Pakistani police to cancel a rally that supporters had wanted to hold for Musharraf Sunday afternoon near Jinnah's mausoleum. And organizers at the airport repeatedly asked his boisterous supporters to move away from the front of the terminal so Musharraf could go outside to greet people.

The former president plans to spend a few days at a hotel in Karachi, where he and his team will hash out their plan for the upcoming election, said spokeswoman Saima Ali Dada. He will then travel to Islamabad. Meanwhile, his legal team will meet to decide the best way to respond to the charges against him.

Musharraf has been implicated in the 2007 assassination of Bhutto, as well as the killing of Akbar Bugti, a Baluch nationalist leader who died in August 2006 after a standoff with the Pakistani military. In another case, he's accused of illegally removing a number of judges, including the chief justice of the supreme court.

His return to Pakistan was made easier when a court in Sindh province where Karachi is located granted him preemptive bail, which essentially meant he could not be arrested immediately upon landing. But he must appear before a court within 10 days, and there is no guarantee that he won't be arrested in the future.

Human Rights Watch has called on the Pakistani government to prosecute him for abuses he is alleged to have committed during his time in office.

Regardless of his political future, Musharraf appeared happy to be back on Pakistani soil.

Soon after he landed, Musharraf tweeted: "Thrilled to be back home."
