Deep-sea crabs grab grub using UV vision: Some crabs on the sea floor can see UV light and use the ability to select healthy food

ScienceDaily (Sep. 6, 2012) ? Crabs living half-a-mile down in the ocean, beyond the reach of sunlight, have a sort of color vision combining sensitivity to blue and ultraviolet light. Their detection of shorter wavelengths may give the crabs a way to ensure they grab food, not poison.

"Call it color-coding your food," said Duke biologist S?nke Johnsen. He explained that the animals might be using their ultraviolet and blue-light sensitivity to "sort out the likely toxic corals they're sitting on, which glow, or bioluminesce, blue-green and green, from the plankton they eat, which glow blue."

The discovery explains what some deep-sea animals use their eyes for and how their sensitivity to light shapes their interactions with their environment. "Sometimes these discoveries can also lead to novel and useful innovations years later," like an X-ray telescope which was based on lobster eyes, said Tamara Frank, a biologist at Nova Southeastern University. She and her collaborators report their findings online Sept. 6 in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Frank, who led the study, has previously shown that certain deep-sea creatures can see ultraviolet wavelengths, despite living at lightless depths. Experiments to test deep-sea creatures' sensitivity to light have only been done on animals that live in the water column at these depths. The new study is one of the first to test how bottom-dwelling animals respond to light.

The scientists studied three ocean-bottom sites near the Bahamas. They took video and images of the regions, recording how crustaceans ate and the wavelengths of light, or color, at which neighboring animals glowed by bioluminescence. The scientists also captured and examined the eyes of eight crustaceans found at the sites and several other sites on earlier cruises.

To capture the crustaceans, the team used the Johnson-Sea-Link submersible. During the dive, crustaceans were gently suctioned into light-tight, temperature-insulated containers. They were brought to the surface, where Frank placed them in holders in her shipboard lab and attached a microelectrode to each of their eyes.

She then flashed different colors and intensities of light at the crustaceans and recorded their eye response with the electrode. From the tests, she discovered that all of the species were extremely sensitive to blue light and two of them were extremely sensitive to both blue and ultraviolet light. The two species sensitive to blue and UV light also used two separate light-sensing channels to make the distinction between the different colors. It's the separate channels that would allow the animals to have a form of color vision, Johnsen said.

During a sub dive, he used a small, digital camera to capture one of the first true-color images of the bioluminescence of the coral and plankton at the sites. In this "remarkable" image, the coral glows greenish, and the plankton, which is blurred because it's drifting by as it hits the coral, glows blue, Frank said.

That "one-in-a-million shot" from the sub "looks a little funky," Johnsen noted. But what it and a video show is crabs placidly sitting on a sea pen, and periodically picking something off and putting it in their mouths. That behavior, plus the data showing the crabs' sensitivity to blue and UV light, suggests that they have a basic color code for their food. The idea is "still very much in the hypothesis stage, but it's a good idea," Johnsen said.

To further test the hypothesis, the scientists need to collect more crabs and test the animals' sensitivity to even shorter wavelengths of light. That might be possible, but the team will have to use a different sub, since the Johnson-Sea-Link is no longer available.

Another challenge is to know whether the way the crabs are acting in the video is natural. "Our subs, nets and ROVs greatly disturb the animals, and we're likely mostly getting video footage of stark terror," Johnsen said. "So we're stuck with what I call forensic biology. We collect information about the animals and the environment and then try to piece together the most likely story of what happened."

Here, the story looks like the crabs are color-coding their food, he said.

Each month, Melcrum SCM Magazine asks two communication experts to argue respective sides of a burning issue. This month, our own Fran Brosan got to debate with Simon Garcia, Internal Communications at Thomson Reuters.

Would integration with external communication mean overexertion for IC?

Simon says yes. ?I don?t believe internal communication is quite fit and lean enough to be ready for the move into an integrated team.? He believes that IC has perhaps the most value to add to business and should lead the comms effort, but because IC does not yet seem to have the necessary skills to maintain focus on revenue-generating outcomes, and measuring and promoting the value we bring to the business that the other comms functions do.

However, Francesca Brosan argues that internal and external communications have to be integrated if companies really want to succeed. ?How can you deepen customer relationships if you don?t make sure everyone in the organisation understands what you are good at??

According to our recent research (What Works Where in B2B Digital Marketing 2012, conducted in partnership with The Marketing Society and Circle Research) deepening customer relationships came back as the number one response, with 75 per cent of marketers putting it as their top priority, followed by building brand awareness and creating thought leadership.

Integrating both internal and external communications would no doubt impact on time pressures, but separating the two exacerbates would create a disconnect between what the organization is trying to achieve and the people who are at the heart of it ? the employees.

First look at structure of vital molecule

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? Molybdenum is an essential metal required in all living beings from bacteria to plants to humans. But as vital as this metal is, no one understood the importance of the structure of a vital molecule that interacts with molybdenum until the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry's Joel Weiner and his team jumped on the case.

Molybdenum plays critical roles in human health. It does not act alone but is found attached to certain proteins, called molybdenum enzymes, by a very large organic molecule. The organic molecule that holds the molybdenum in place in a protein is extraordinarily complex -- and "expensive" for the cell to make. But the structure of this molecule should make sense to scientists now, thanks to Weiner and his research team.

For starters, the research group found that the molecule occurs in nature in two forms based on their appearance -- flat or distorted. Weiner's team was able to show that the distorted form and flat form have very different functions. The distorted molecule plays a role in the transfer of electrons to the molybdenum, whereas the flat molecule prepares and co-ordinates positioning of the enzyme so it can be part of a biochemical reaction.

"This is important because molybdenum is so essential throughout biology," said Weiner. "We need to understand why the cell goes to all this trouble."

The distorted form is found in proteins involved in metabolic, respiratory and cardiac diseases. The flat form occurs in a protein required for brain development, and defects in this protein cause death in infancy. Understanding of this flat form could help lead to treatment of this defect.

It all started for Weiner and his research group in the Department of Biochemistry about three years ago. Although scientists worldwide had known the overall structure of molybdenum in proteins for many years, no one understood why it is so complicated. It was a summer student, Matthew Solomonson, who noticed that one of the structures holding molybdenum was very flat while the other group was distorted. As curiosity-based research goes, the summer student and Weiner's research team wondered if it was significant. The answer is yes.

"When you bring in a new student it's really good because they have a fresh way of looking at things," says Weiner of Solomonson who is now a grad student at the University of British Columbia.

"This discovery is a major one for my lab and will have a huge impact on molybdenum biochemistry research."

Now the team will use protein-engineering techniques to change the protein environment around the molybdenum.

"This is a critical next step," said Weiner. "We hope to finally start understanding the chemistry of these enzymes at atomic resolution, and to modulate their activities to better understand human disease and explore potential biotechnology and biomedical applications."

This work is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

      Rev. Moon oversaw large, often bickering brood

      SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? The late Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the Unification Church founder who died this week at 92, had 14 children with his second wife, Hak Ja Han Moon, according to his autobiography. He also had one child with his first wife, officials say, and at least one illegitimate child, according to one of his daughters.

      He and his second wife are revered by followers as the "True Parents," but their brood of children has suffered estrangements, deaths, suicide, lawsuits, public bickering, the airing of intimate secrets ? and one reality TV show appearance. Here's a look at some of the more prominent Moon children:

      HYO-JIN MOON

      The Moons' eldest son, he reportedly died of a heart attack in 2008. Born in 1962, he was a musician and producer and recorded more than a dozen albums, according to a church-affiliated website. His former wife, Nonsook Hong, claimed he was an alcoholic and drug addict who beat her, including while she was seven months pregnant with their fifth child. He was given huge amounts of cash by his mother that he used to buy cocaine and throw parties, Hong told the U.S. television news program "60 Minutes" in 1998. She said she was chosen by the Rev. Moon to marry Hyo-jin when she was 15.

      HYUN-JIN PRESTON MOON

      Born in 1969, he went to Columbia and Harvard Business School and twice competed in the Olympics for the South Korean equestrian team, according to the church-affiliated website. He played a leading role in church business and media interests, including the Washington Times newspaper, but he has also been involved in rifts with his siblings and parents. His company sued his mother's missionary group in 2011, demanding the return of more than $22 million the company claimed was sent without its consent to her group. A court ruled that the money was a loan but ordered it returned, the church said. Preston is still in charge of a church organization in the United States, Unification Church International, but church officials said they have asked him to leave the job.

      HYUNG-JIN SEAN MOON

      Born in New York in 1979 and educated at Harvard, he is the Moons' youngest son and the church head. He practiced Buddhism when younger, shaving his head and wearing monastic robes, and said he turned to the religion after a brother died in what U.S. officials called a suicide. He said he worried about his father's reaction to the religious decision but the Rev. Moon told followers not to criticize him. He titled a book of his essays, "A Bald Head and a Strawberry." He was chosen to lead the church in 2008. He is more fluent in English than Korean, and many of his English sermons are designed to appeal to young followers.

      KOOK-JIN JUSTIN MOON

      Justin, 42, was the last of the children born in South Korea and also went to Harvard, the church website said. He runs the Tongil Group, the church's business arm, and owns U.S.-based gun manufacturer Kahr Arms.

      YEON-JIN KAT MOON

      Born in the United States, she is a graduate of New York University in journalism and economics, according to the church-affiliated website. She also briefly appeared on a TV reality show in the U.S., "Survival of the Richest," in 2006. Press reviews of the first episode reported her family fortune as $989 million and said she claimed to suffer from "chronic boredom" ? and that she was voted off the show by the other rich kids at the end of the first episode.

      YOUNG-JIN MOON

      The 21-year-old committed suicide in 1999 by jumping from the 17th floor of a hotel in downtown Reno, Nevada, local officials said. He had been visiting the University of Nevada campus and considering whether to study hotel management there or at home in Las Vegas, church officials said at the time. Young-jin was said to not be heavily involved in the church. A church newsletter said his November 1997 wedding "set the stage for the blessing of 3.6 million couples worldwide."

      HEUNG-JIN MOON

      The 17-year-old died in 1984 when the car he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer in New York. He had been engaged to the prima ballerina daughter of Bo Hi Pak, the head of the church's Korean Cultural Foundation, and their wedding went ahead as planned despite his death. He was wed posthumously in a "spiritual" marriage to Julia Moon, who is now a prominent figure in South Korea's arts scene.

      UN-JIN MOON

      Un-jin, another daughter, told "60 Minutes" in 1998 that she was estranged from her parents. When she told her parents that her husband beat her, they responded that she deserved it, she said. She also told the TV program that she knew Moon had at least one illegitimate son.

      SUNG-JIN MOON

      Sung-jin was born in 1946 to Rev. Moon and his first wife, Choi Sun-kil, and lives in Japan, according to church officials and a church defector, Lee Young-sun.

      IN-JIN MOON

      The Moons' third daughter was born in South Korea and moved to the United States with her family in 1973, the church-affiliated website said. She went to Columbia and Harvard and was appointed president and CEO of the Unification Church in America in August 2008, according to the website.
