5 gang members suspected in Southern California cellphone store burglaries

Five suspected Inglewood gang members have been arrested on suspicion of cutting holes into the roofs of cellphone stores from the San Fernando Valley to the South Bay, slithering inside and stealing thousands of dollars worth of phones, El Segundo police said Thursday.

The arrests Wednesday and Thursday cracked down on a crime wave that since November has victimized some 30 stores across Southern California, including T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and other companies, El Segundo police Lt. Jaime Bermudez said.

Victims found thieves had either cut holes in their roofs or broke in through roof vents and discovered large numbers of phones missings. A T-Mobile store at Sepulveda Boulevard and Grand Avenue was burglarized in February.

"It's been going on for a long, long time," Bermudez said. "Their mistake was committing one in El Segundo. "

Stolen phones were shipped out of the country, where they were sold and activated, Bermudez said.

"We think that's how they make a lot of their gang member money," Bermudez said.

El Segundo detectives, along with officers from the LA Impact task force and the Los Angeles Police Department's Commercial Crimes unit, conducted surveillance on the suspects. On Wednesday, SWAT teams from El Segundo, Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Gardena and Inglewood served search warrants at several residences in Inglewood and Los Angeles.

Arrested on suspicion of burglary were Keith Walton, 42; Darrell Dent, 35; Lina Houze, 26; Charles Mays, 47; and Jeremy Tillett, 24, all of Inglewood.

Burglaries occurred in communities including El Segundo, Marina del Rey, Commerce, Bellflower, Lancaster, Culver City, Inglewood, Northridge, Panorama City, Studio City, Thousand Oaks and Los Angeles.

France confirms 1st case of new SARS-related virus

PARIS (AP) ? A 65-year-old Frenchman is hospitalized after contracting France's first case of a deadly new respiratory virus related to SARS, and French health authorities said Wednesday they are trying to find anyone who might have been in contact with him to prevent it from spreading.

It's unclear how or where the man was infected with the novel coronavirus, which has killed 18 people and raised new public health concerns since being identified last year in the Middle East. It can cause acute pneumonia and kidney failure.

The patient fell ill after returning from a nine-day vacation in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates as part of a package tour, the Health Ministry said. Jean-Yves Grall, the French government health director, said the patient is in "worrying condition" under isolation and medical surveillance, receiving respiratory assistance and blood transfusions.

The man, whose identity was not released, returned from Dubai on April 17. He was hospitalized with respiratory problems in the northern French city of Valenciennes on April 23, and transferred to a more advanced facility in Douai on April 29, Grall told a news conference Wednesday.

Paris' Pasteur Institute analyzed the man's virus and confirmed Tuesday that it is a novel coronavirus.

Since September 2012, the World Health Organization has been informed of 30 confirmed cases of the virus, and 18 of the patients have died. Cases have emerged in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, Britain and Germany, and health officials say the virus has likely already spread from person to person in some circumstances.

Since the virus emerged last year, European authorities have put in place monitoring measures. In France, 20 people were examined for suspected cases of the virus, and the other 19 turned up negative, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said.

The patient who traveled to Dubai is the only positive case. His family members have been tested and are not infected, the Health Ministry said, and the other travelers in his tour group and health care workers who had contact with him are also being tested.

Authorities are trying to reach anyone else who was in contact with the patient before he was hospitalized, and a national hotline was established Wednesday for the public to call about the virus.

WHO has advised countries to test any people with unexplained pneumonia.

"Any virus that has the potential to develop into something that is highly transmissible between people, including the coronavirus, is a major concern," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said.

"We need to follow up on all possible routes of infection, i.e. animal to human, whether it's being spread in hospitals or from human-to-human," he said.

Health authorities are trying to determine how humans are contracting and spreading the virus and how best to treat it. It does not appear to be as contagious as SARS or the flu, but it seems to have spread among family members in Britain and in health workers in Jordan who were caring for patients, for example.

The new coronavirus is most closely related to a bat virus and scientists are considering whether bats or other animals like goats or camels are a possible source of infection.

Hartl said it's unclear whether there is something specific in the environment in the Middle Eastern countries where cases have been confirmed.

SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, killed some 800 people in a 2003 epidemic.

NKorea: Detained American smuggled in propaganda

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea says a Korean-American man sentenced last week to 15 years' hard labor smuggled in unspecified inflammatory literature and tried to establish a base for anti-Pyongyang activities at a hotel in the border city of Rason.

The statement late Thursday from an unidentified Supreme Court spokesman provides the most in-depth look so far of Pyongyang's allegations against Kenneth Bae. But it is still short on specific details. Bae hasn't made a public statement.

Pyongyang sentenced the Washington state man for what it called hostile acts against the state.

The statement says Bae gave anti-Pyongyang lectures in China and brought about 250 students into Rason. It didn't elaborate.

Analysts say Pyongyang may be using Bae as bait to gain direct talks with Washington.

Pyongyang rejects such speculation.

To buy the world-renowned English football club Manchester United almost eight years ago, Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer and family incurred great debt, and some United fans have been less than pleased about the new ownership.

Nevertheless, Manchester United has fared quite well from a competitive perspective?in recent years, winning the Premier League five times in the last seven seasons, including the 2012-13 title. Also, United captured the prestigious?UEFA Champions League in 2008. And as the Guardian pointed out in April, the Glazers? investment could pay off handsomely, with the club valued more than double what it was upon their takeover.

However, United now faces a daunting challenge: replacing retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is leaving his post at season?s end.

In a statement released on the club?s website, Ferguson praised the club?s ownership?as well as CEO David Gill.

?Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy Chief Executive in David Gill,? Ferguson said. ?I am truly grateful to all of them.?

Malcolm Glazer has owned the Buccaneers for close to 20 years. The team has hired four new head coaches in that span: Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, Raheem Morris and Greg Schiano. The firings of Dungy and Gruden were big NFL stories; Dungy, after all, helped lead the Buccaneers to four playoff berths, and Gruden?s first Buccaneers team won the franchise?s only Super Bowl.

However, it?s safe to say the Glazer family has never been involved in a coaching change of the magnitude that will occur at United.?In 26 seasons as United?s manager, Ferguson won 13 Premier League championships, and he was knighted in 1999.

Joel Glazer, a co-chairman of the Buccaneers, an executive co-chairman of United and the son of Malcolm Glazer, paid tribute to Ferguson.

?Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he?s also a wonderful person. His determination to succeed and dedication to the Club have been truly remarkable,? Glazer said in a statement from the club.

According to the Guardian, Everton manager David Moyes appears a strong candidate?to replace Ferguson.

Penalties and lawsuit combine University of Michigan, Vijay Singh and NASCAR

Wednesday was quite a day for legal- and penalty-type sports action.

A ban between four former players and their university ended ? kind of ? in Michigan.

A pro golfer who never helped his professional image is suing the PGA for doing its job.

NASCAR realized the error of its ways and reduced a driver?s penalty.

If the University of Michigan desires, Chris Webber, Louise Bullock and Maurice Taylor can have a relationship with their former school for the first time in 10 years. The three former basketball Wolverines basketball players and the late Robert Traylor were forced into a decade-long disassociation for their part in a scandal that involved the late Ed Martin.

For 10 years the players couldn?t help in recruiting, participate in fundraising or receive tickets or privileges not awarded to the general public. Their records are gone. The banners celebrating their national championships are in a drawer behind a locked door.

The four were penalized because of ?their involvement in violations of NCAA rules? and for their refusal to cooperate with university and NCAA investigators as they looked into Martin?s habit of providing gifts and money to recruits.

Even though the disassociation has technically ended, the former players remain on the ?do not call? list until the school says it wants to renew the relationship.

Vijay Singh will tee it up with J.J. Henry and Robert Garrigus in the first two rounds of the Players Championship. It should be interesting to see how the world?s No. 111-ranked player fares in the days after suing the PGA Tour for unspecified monetary damages.

He claims the Tour subjected him to ?public humiliation and ridicule for months? by suspending him for using deer antler spray that contained the banned substance IGF-1. Singh admitted using the spray, but appealed the 90-day suspension because he didn?t believe the ingredient in his spray was the same one on the World Anti-Doping Agency?s banned list.

After further testing, the PGA Tour determined the ingredient does not help athletes, dropped it from the banned list and cleared Singh.

Singh issued a statement that read: ?I am proud of my achievements, my work ethic, and the way I live my life. The PGA Tour not only treated me unfairly, but displayed a lack of professionalism that should concern every professional golfer and fan of the game.?

Matt Kenseth, Joe Gibbs and their racing team snared a big off-track win from the NCASCAR Stock Car Racing Commission appeals panel Wednesday afternoon.

The three-man panel restored many of the driver and car owner?s points lost after Kenseth?s car failed inspection after he won the STP 400.

Instead of 50-point penalties, Kenseth and Gibbs were docked 12 points each and all other penalties for the two were rescinded, including the suspension of Gibbs? owner?s license. Crew chief Jason Ratcliff?s fine of $200,000 was not altered, but his suspension was reduced from six events to one and he will be on probation through the completion of the next three points events.

Kenseth?s car failed when inspection revealed one of eight control rods measured approximately two grams below the minimum weight of 525 grams specified by NASCAR.

Soap Dish: Jeanne Cooper Health Update

It is Soap Dish time again and this week I am dishing all about sending prayers out to the lovely Jeanne Cooper. A couple of weeks ago I did a column on the health crisisof Jeanne and at the time things were looking up. At one point she was released from the hospital but now unfortunately she is back in. Despite the death rumors that circulated last week, Cooper is alive and fighting her heath battle like a trooper. Her son Corbin Bernsen posted this message on Facebook after Jeanne was once again hospitalized. “Not sure what to pray for at this point or what we even want for her,” Bernsen wrote. “I know in my heart there is more for her to do in this world, but I also know there is a season for all things. I want more than anything comfort for her. I want her to have peace. This is that tricky place where you start to weight all things, not what we need to do, actions to take, but instead open ourselves for enlightenment as to what God has planned for her and ultimately what is best for her.
