Geron jumps on analyst view of cancer drugs

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of Geron Corp. climbed Thursday after a Stifel Nicolaus analyst said the company should report a series of positive results from clinical trials of two cancer drugs over the coming months.

THE SPARK: Analyst Brian Klein started covering Geron shares with a "Buy" rating, saying the company should report data from six studies of its drug candidates imetelstat and GERN1005 over the next six to nine months. Klein said that data should pave the way for late-stage studies and a collaboration with a larger drug company.

"We expect compelling evidence in one of these two indications will lead to a registrational program and could generate a lucrative partnership," he wrote.

Klein set a price target of $4 per share.

THE BIG PICTURE: The Menlo Park, Calif., company is running four midstage studies of imetelstat as a treatment for lung cancer and breast cancer, and two of GRN1005 as a treatment for lung and breast cancer that have spread to the brain. Imetelstat is designed to inhibit an enzyme called telomerase, which is found in high levels in cancer cells. Geron says the drug may be less toxic to normal cells than standard chemotherapy.

While most cancer drugs cannot enter the brain, the company says GRN1005 is designed to deliver the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel to the brain so it can work on brain tumors.

Geron pioneered the development of embryonic stem cell therapies and ran the first human trials of treatments based on embryonic stem cells. However in 2011 the company ended a trial of a stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries and said it would focus on its cancer drugs.

SHARE ACTION: Shares of Geron picked up 25 cents, or 10.3 percent, to $2.66 in midday trading. The stock traded as low as $1.25 in June and reached its current 52-week high of $3.13 in September 2011. The shares last traded over $4 in July 2011.

Gnome-flavored Ubuntu desktop environment coming for purest purists

Gnome

If you're a Linux user squarely in the Gnome desktop camp and sneer with disdain at the mention of Unity, there's good news -- your preferred flavor is coming, uncontaminated, to Ubuntu. Though "GNOMEBuntu" was originally floated as a name for the new environment, that idea was apparently kiboshed by the Gnome Foundation, leaving "GNOBuntu" and "Gnubuntu" as possible monikers, according to Mutkware. Neither Unity, nor cloud service Ubuntu One will be included in the distro, but you'll find a library of apps pre-installed, including the Epiphany browser and Rhythmbox music player. Customized settings will let you further tweak the purity level to suit your zeal -- so, if you're thinking about grabbing the upcoming alpha, check the source for more info.

What I Wanted Is Not What I Want

When Kevin left for Spain last fall, I went through a period of intense domestic yearning. I wrote about it a bit here, but I?ll tell you now that it was basically the first time in a long time when I?d longed for a settled life. A house, a yard, a family.

I can see now, of course, that it wasn?t specific to Kevin. Wasn?t The One, obviously, and maybe I just wanted a little stability for a while. Maybe I just wanted to live in a world where I wouldn?t have to move every 6-12 months, could put up jams in my own kitchen and tend my own garden (with chickens and goats). A world where my boyfriend wouldn?t leave for Spain when I was already not 100% convinced about Us, thereby causing me to romanticize and project a whole bunch of dreams and desires onto him that he would, in the end, fail to live up to. Dreams of rings, ceremonies, public commitment?

?but I digress a bit. The point is, I was feeling very much that way, and then I went to California to visit two friends?Laura, who was about to have her baby (Lucia Francis, born 11-11-11), and Whitney, who was beginning the active planning phase of her wedding (July 29th, 2012). So it was baby showers and dress shopping. Seeing what young and married with a baby on the way looks like. Watching a friend get ready to share her entire life with somebody else.

And then it occurred to me that I didn?t want what they had. Not that they didn?t seem happy?they did?but I just realized that maybe their happy wasn?t my happy. I came home to a new nephew, followed by another, and I remained the Auntie. Child-less, spouse-less. Directionless, yes, true, but very helpful.

Except that now it sometimes drains me to be around families, as though ball-and-chaindom were contagious. And I feel a bit guilty about that, I do. Feel guilty for putting myself first. But maybe that?s just the difference between me and my loved ones with loved ones of their own.

In the guest book at Laura and Mel?s shower, I wrote this:

?I used to think love was something instant, yes or no, like a chemical reaction. But as I grow older, I see that love can be something you make together, like a house that you build around yourselves, a place to take shelter.?

*?????? *?????? *

Now, almost a year later, I know even less. Only that this hurts. And that I still don?t want to be anybody?s mother or anybody?s wife.

Va. Church Says Rules Limiting Electronic Signs to 2 Messages Per Day Violates Free Speech

VIENNA, Va. ? If the Church of the Good Shepherd wanted to post the Ten Commandments on its sign on Hunter Mill Road, it would take five days to broadcast them all.

That?s because Fairfax County has a commandment of its own: Thou shall not change electronic signs more than twice a day.

So, after the Vienna United Methodist church posted three messages one day last month ? offering refuge from the heat, then promoting its Web site and finally listing the time of a group prayer meeting ? a zoning inspector called it a sin and hit the church with a warning letter:

?It is noted that the screens changed more than twice in a twenty-four (24) hour period,? the letter stated. ?This changeable copy LED sign is considered a prohibited sign.?

The county offered two choices: permanently limit the sign to two message changes per day or remove it altogether.

At a meeting at the end of July, about two months after the church installed the sign, the county and the congregation couldn?t agree on a compromise. So the church, believing that the First Amendment also applies to the word of God, sued last week in federal court in Alexandria, saying the two-message limit violates the church?s rights to free speech and the free exercise of religion. The suit says that the county?s ordinance violates a 2000 law, the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, which prohibits zoning rules that place undue burdens on religious institutions.

?Under the county?s restrictive policy, the church must pick and choose which of its various functions can be displayed on its sign each day,? the suit says. ?Such an impact is a substantial burden on the church?s religious exercise.?

County officials declined to comment, as is their policy when a lawsuit is pending. Several members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors said they weren?t aware of the two-message limit and didn?t want to discuss it until they learned more.

?It doesn?t make a whole lot of sense to me,? Supervisor Pat S. Herrity (R-Springfield) said.

Neighbors, even those who said they don?t like the sign, said it seemed a waste of government time and resources to worry about the number of messages on a church sign.

?It?s a pretty small fish in the scheme of things,? Steve Hull said.

At the crux of the matter is a zoning ordinance that bans electronic signs that use flashing lights or moving text. But what qualifies as moving? The county defines it as changing a sign?s message more than twice in 24 hours.

?It?s just too restrictive,? Sherry Spinelli, a member of the church?s board of trustees, said this week. ?It doesn?t make sense.?

She noted that the church got the proper county permit to erect the $37,000 sign but said it wasn?t aware of the message limit until the county?s letter arrived.

In addition to the lawsuit, a county spokeswoman said staff members also couldn?t discuss the ordinance, including its purpose, history or past cases in which it has been enforced.

The church?s attorney, Michael York, said the limit is applied arbitrarily. Electronic signs that display the time or weather information, for instance, are exempt. Although the county provided the church with examples of past cases in which it has enforced the rule, Spinelli said that in paying closer attention to electronic signs in recent weeks, she has seen several without time or weather information that don?t comply.

She and others with the church think their sign was singled out because someone complained to the county. They suspect it might have been the same person who phoned anonymously a few weeks after the sign?s installation and angrily asked when the church got ?that Las Vegas sign.?

The sign isn?t exactly flashy. It stands a few feet off the ground at the edge of the church parking lot, facing the street. The electronic portion is about 2? feet tall and 6 feet wide. Its green letters, on a black background, can at times be hard to read.

Spinelli noted that on the day the county?s investigator observed the sign, just after the June 29 derecho storm, one of the offending messages invited neighbors without power into the air-conditioned church.

On Monday, the sign?s message was, ?8:30 am prayer, 9 am Sunday school, 10 am worship.?

The next day, it read, ?Morning prayer, Wednesday at 6:30 am.?

The messages for which the church was cited were similarly staid.

?Welcome, come on in and beat the heat,? read the first.

?Visit us at goodshepherdva.com,? read the second.

And the third advertised a prayer group meeting: ?Practicing the Presence, Thurs., July 5, 1 pm.?

The mere fact that the new sign is more noticeable than the old one ? its lettering had to be changed manually ? is enough to have caused a stir along wooded, winding Hunter Mill Road. The two-lane thoroughfare predates the Civil War and is officially designated a Virginia scenic byway. More than one civic group works to preserve it.

Members of the Hunters Valley Association and the Hunter Mill Defense League said the groups consider the church a good neighbor and have no plans to try to get the sign taken down, but they acknowledged they don?t especially like it either.

?It has a commercial look,? said Hull, of the defense league. The organization would have advocated a more understated sign had it been given a chance to weigh in, he said.

?Our main concern is that we don?t see a proliferation of these kinds of signs,? Bill Cramer, another member, said.

Both groups said the number of different messages displayed in a day was of no concern to them.

Church leaders never imagined the sign might cause problems and that wasn?t their intent, Spinelli said. Rather, it was the exact opposite.

?We want to be a good neighbor,? she said. ?That?s what the messages are all about.?

She said the church has no desire to use flashing or scrolling text or to change the sign numerous times each day.

But there might be situations in which more than two messages make sense, she said. Say, for example, that the sign advertises a Boy Scouts meeting in the morning and the next day?s services in the afternoon. What if a neighborhood child is kidnapped later in the day or a major storm comes in? If it abided by the rules, the church wouldn?t be able to post emergency information for the community.

?We just want the freedom to post the messages we see fit,? Spinelli said. (AP)

Small droplets of friction-generated melts weaken faults and can lead to 'megaquakes'

Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have come a step closer to deciphering some of the basic mysteries and mechanisms behind earthquakes and how average-sized earthquakes may evolve into massive earthquakes.

In a paper published in the Aug. 30 issue of the journal Nature, Scripps scientists Kevin Brown and Yuri Fialko describe new information gleaned from laboratory experiments mimicking earthquake processes. The researchers discovered how fault zones weaken in select locations shortly after a fault reaches an earthquake tipping point.

They coined such locations as "melt welts" and describe the mechanism akin to an ice skater's blade reducing friction by melting the ice surface. The mechanism may be similar to "hot spots" known in automobile brake-clutch components.

"Melt welts appear to be working as part of a complicated feedback mechanism where complex dynamic weakening processes become further concentrated into initially highly stressed regions of a fault," said Brown, first author of the study and a professor in the Geosciences Research Division at Scripps. "The process allows highly stressed areas to rapidly break down, acting like the weakest links in the chain. Even initially stable regions of a fault can experience runaway slip by this process if they are pushed at velocities above a key tipping point."

"This adds to the fundamental understanding of the earthquake process because it really addresses the question of how these ruptures become energetic and dynamic and run away for long distances," said Fialko, a paper coauthor and a professor in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps.

The study's results, supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, appear to help answer a longstanding paradox in seismology. Key fault zones such as the San Andreas Fault produce far too little heat from friction compared with the size and magnitude of the earthquakes they produce. Laboratory experiments show that thermal energy normally released by friction during slip can become rapidly reduced, potentially helping to account for a "low heat flow paradox." The melt welts also may help explain certain questions in earthquake rupture dynamics such as why some slowly slipping tremor-generating events can snowball into massive earthquakes if they pass a velocity tipping point.

"This may be relevant for how you get from large earthquakes to giant earthquakes," said Brown, who used the example of last year's magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Japan. "We thought that large patches of the fault were just creeping along at a constant rate, then all of a sudden they were activated and slipped to produce a mega earthquake that produced a giant tsunami."

Fialko says the melt welt finding could eventually lead to improved "shake" maps of ground-shaking intensities, as well as improvements in structural engineering plans. Future studies include investigations about why the melt welt weakening occurs and if it applies to most or all common fault zone materials, as well as field research to locate melt welts along fault zones.

The Scripps Marine Science Development Center provided the machinery used in the study's experiments.

Relationships: Do You Need Or Want Them?

I just don?t know who I am anymore.? I mean to separate from him.?

I knew how she felt because I had been in that place myself. There was a time I needed my husband so much that nothing else mattered.? My whole world revolved around him and his happiness.? This sounds good on the surface, right?? Who wouldn?t want a wife who loved so completely?? Yes, I loved this completely, at the expense of my own identity.? I felt I was no one without him.? He was my life.

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.? When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Colossians 3:3-4.

I had my priorities mixed up.? It was Christ who was my life, not my husband.? At this time in our marriage we were trying to restore our broken relationship and in order to make it work, I felt I had to be everything to him and do anything for him.? Life was difficult for me as I lost my identity and became a woman I was not meant to be.? My husband was an idol in my life and there was no room for a growing relationship with Jesus.? I became stagnant spiritually and burned out physically, emotionally, and mentally trying to make my husband happy.? Striving to be perfect drove me to the point of exhaustion.? My feelings told me I needed him more than anything so, I worked hard to keep him.? I thought, ?Who would I be without him??

Fast forward to today.? I don?t need my husband, I want him.? There?s a huge difference.? Needing him led to bitterness and resentment.? I could never be perfect no matter how hard I tried, so my failures were ever before me.? Wanting him creates a real love and respect between us.? Now I am a woman set free by the grace of God.? Knowing who I am in Christ Jesus gives me confidence to live life being myself, taking off the masks of pretending, and letting my husband know the real me.? Guess what?? He loves the real me, the imperfect me, the me I was created to be!

When people control our actions and thoughts they become life to us.? The truth gets distorted and we lose focus.?? But the truth is Jesus is LIFE and we should never allow a person to take His place.? If we need someone so much that we think we have to put on a mask and be something we are not, then it?s time for a change.? Change can only happen when we come to the realization that people are not perfect, people will disappoint, people will betray, and people can?t fill our emptiness with their love.? God is love and His love fills every need we have.? He never betrays, disappoints or leaves us empty.

1 John 4:16? So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.? God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

When we live out of Christ?s life in us, we love others with the love of God.? Then in those moments when they let us down, we can give grace because it isn?t us giving it, it?s Him giving and loving through us.? Now we can love others and want relationship with them, but we don?t need that relationship to survive because we know we have abundant life through Jesus Christ our Lord!

I am praying for my friend to find her identity in Christ and not in her husband.? When she begins to live as the woman she was always meant to be, she will love and respect him so much more fully than she ever could do while wearing a mask.? It?s out of the fullness of God?s love that Christ lives His life through us and that?s where real freedom and true love is found.

Galatians 5:1? For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

LIVE FULL!

Yahoo's new CEO finds her chief marketing officer

(AP) ? Yahoo is bringing in a new chief marketing officer as the troubled Internet company tries to burnish its image and revive its revenue growth under recently hired CEO Marissa Mayer.

Kathy Savitt will start working as Yahoo's marketing chief on Sept. 14. Mayer persuaded Savitt to leave Lockerz, an online commerce service that she has been running since 2009.

Savitt, 48, will remain Lockerz' chairman and also will make a personal investment in the company she is leaving behind. Mark Stabingas, Lockerz' chief operating officer, will replace Savitt as the startup's CEO.

The hiring announced Monday is one of the first major pieces in the management team that Mayer is cobbling together to help turn around Yahoo. Mayer, 37, became Yahoo's CEO six weeks ago, ending her 13-year stint as a key executive at Internet search leader Google Inc.

Yahoo, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has been stuck in an extended financial funk that has depressed its stock. Mayer is the fifth CEO in the past five years to attempt a turnaround.

"Yahoo is at an important and unique inflection point in its storied history," Savitt said in a statement.

Before launching Lockerz in 2009, Savitt was a marketing and communications sharpshooter at retailers American Eagle Outfitters Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.

You Know About Swimming Pool Contractors Lighting

Swimming pool contractors know every element of pool development and will know how to fix or substitute anything on your pool that needs to be done. Quite often, the excellent of perform that Swimming Pool Contractors do is far excellent to what a subcontractor does. Also, when you begin modifying out the floor and dealing, you begin to want to create other changes in your pool while it is under development.

Another inclusion that people want to put on their swimming pool is a spa. Maybe at the time that they designed their pool, they did not have resources for it. Now they are recognizing that they want a heated, healing atmosphere to rest in. This is not a hard accomplishment for swimming pool contractors as although there is development with electric and water system elements engaged, they have plenty of encounters doing it.

Pool Lighting

Safety is the area of utmost concern when deciding on swimming pool lighting, however considering the vastness of opportunities provided by the clean lined architecture of water bodies and the affects that can be achieved because of the illumination in water; this still remains the area of utmost interest.

There are various factors which have to be taken into consideration as a pre requisite when we are designing for the lighting of a pool, and the most important one is the provision of RCCB for the entire area which incorporates the pool. This is something which usually remains ignored by the contractors and swimming pool being a industry at nascent stage in Indian scenario, nevertheless this is the most vital component of the entire swimming pool lighting as this is what ensures the safety of the bathers against the leakage of current in the event of system malfunction.

With large swimming pool areas, fluorescents light sources are a great way of achieving the appropriate light levels needed for the space. Whether linear or compact, fluorescents provide great volumes of light whilst helping you to be energy efficient. Swimming pool lighting provides a range of opportunities because of the voluminous space they offer. We have variety of options starting from the normal halogen lamps and ending at the latest technologies like fiber optic and LED's. Fiber optics and LED's offer us the opportunity to light up the pool in linear strip pattern as well as dotted pattern, the latest one of the two is LED as the consumption of electricity is less and the life of bulb is also longer.

Creative lighting can enhance every experience. This should include scene setting which is now available through wired, wireless or remote lighting controls allowing the user total flexibility over their environment. The other important aspect that needs to be addressed by the contractors is the placement of the lights , as at times the similar lights with slightly innovative perspective to their placement provide entirely different get up to the pool , for instance providing the entire lighting of an infinity pool on the wall opposite to the vanishing edge wall- lightens up the vanishing edge of the water at the top , but hides the source of light from the people sitting on the deck, hence giving totally different character to the entire landscape, with the feel of an enigma.

That place is often a Advertising and marketing Newsroom (SMNR). Akin to an old-fashioned online newsroom, it lists media coverage, news releases, events, media contact details, and so on, but also includes web 2 . 0 and Blogging platforms.0 elements which allow individuals to share and talk with its content.
The SMNR fulfills this traditional purpose while taking advantage of the tremendous indexing opportunities creating of social bookmarks and RSS feed services like Technorati, del.icio.us, Digg, and Feedburner provide. Suppose every entry manufactured in your newsroom (all your media coverage, press announcments, bios, photos, vidcasts, podcasts, events, etc.) hasn?t been only indexed online and every one of additional search engines like yahoo, but in popular bookmarking and RSS feed servicesaccessible by scores of bloggers and Web surfers. This is the true power on the SMNR for entrepreneurs, small business owners, authors, and small pressesexposure.

This fantastic exposure is a byproduct of your original reason the SMNR was developed, nonetheless it has grown beyond only a electronic repository. It is the blueprint for your new mediaa media that understands multimedia and wants a one-stop go shopping for just of fabric they will requirement of their coverage. This new media wants an element that is fully downloadable and print ready, easily given to their colleagues, with links and searches that will lead them directly to more relevant information. Most essential, though, they gotta have an establishment that welcomes their comments and invites interactivity.

In case you already have a website with a lot of of the features, you may wonder the reasons you demand a newsroom. First, a newsroom tells the people in the media and prospects you?re setting up a serious effort for making their jobs easier. A social media newsroom is quite like an argument, in this standardization is vital to allow for easy navigation and content extraction through the media.

Second, as mentioned earlier, a web 2 . 0 newsroom (if built utilizing a platform for example WordPress) suggests that each entry inside your newsroom, from a blog post to the simple image, could be automatically indexed from search engines, Feed indexes, and social bookmark submitting services, since each entry is itself some other page of sorts. This means someone can find your website by running into your company logo image, by seeking a blog as regards to your organization expertise, by searching for relevant sites tagged in Technorati or del.icio.us, or by searching for Bottles. Consider that it?s like by doing this: You?ll have one lottery ticket who are holding cards or one hundredyou figure the chances.

But, a web 2 . 0 newsroom ought not replace your existing Web page. You will always would like a position for blogging and use a classical place to present additional information. You will also do all of your ?selling? on the Internet site. Your SMNR is not a sales tool! Your newsroom is supposed to be a neutral destination to present your media materialsjust being a mega-press release.

Many smaller businesses or entrepreneurs might possibly not have enough media coverage yet to warrant an extensive newsroom, but it doesn?t mean they cannot reap the benefits of advertising and marketing optimization. They and folks should think about building their Web pages with a blogging service like WordPress to power their sites. Provided each of the benefits of social bookmarking, Nourishes, etc. which is a very simple technique to build and look after a feature-rich Web-site. Obviously, the perfect scenario should be to have both!

Guest Post: Step 9 ? Nurture Happiness and Foster Resilience ...

By?Janine Kovac

When my husband and I first found out that we had a high-risk twin pregnancy?with 50/50 odds that we would lose the twins?I realized that my current set of coping skills and strategies were inadequate. I couldn?t just sit back and ?hope for the best? and I couldn?t wish for a different kind of pregnancy or a different kind of life; I needed a way to accept my current situation and if possible, even learn to enjoy it. I turned to Christine Carter?s work with the Greater Good Science Center, specifically the Raising Happiness blog and her book Raising Happiness?with occasional insights that I pulled from cognitive science.

We started with by taking care of ourselves first and by building our social support. When our boys were born in December instead of April (when they were due), we found comfort in our growth mindsets. In my last guest post, ?Step 8: Enjoy the Present Moment,? the twins were home and healthy and I was wondering if the metaphors I used for time?make time, spend time, lose time?were actually affecting my ability to manage my days with less stress and more joy.

Step 9 from Raising Happiness (?Rig Their Environment for Happiness?) presents the paradox that parents are faced with. On the one hand, we want to raise our children in an environment that maximizes their potential for a joyful life (and chapters 1 through 8 provide concrete ways to do this). At the same time, we can?t stick our children in a bubble with the hopes that nothing bad will happen to them.

To address the step, I had intended to write about the twins coming home after three months in the newborn intensive care unit (the NICU) and how we worried our way through the first year. We had weekly meetings with infant-development specialists and monthly medical appointments that monitored the twins? delayed development. I wanted to capture the essence of the paradox that Christine describes in her chapter: while there are definite steps we can take to positively impact our children?s happiness and resilience, our control over our children?s environment is limited. I had the post all mapped out.

But then my husband?s dad died.

A few years ago my father-in-law had been diagnosed with a rare and stubborn form of cancer. This past Christmas we came to understand that his options for further treatment were limited. Over Easter my father-in-law entered into hospice care.

After spending spring break with her grandparents, my five-year-old daughter asked me,
?Is Grandpa going to get better??

?No,? I had to tell her.

?Is Grandpa going to die??

?Yes,? I had to tell her.

Here it was, in a spontaneous conversation with my daughter: the reason I needed Chapter 9. We can model a growth mindset for our children. We can practice gratitude and optimism as a family. We can have happiness routines that foster healthy living. But Grandpa?s cancer is terminal.

?I have some books for you,? the director of my daughter?s preschool told me when she heard the news. She sent me home an armful of books from the center?s lending library. They had titles such as: When Someone You Love Has Cancer: A Guide to Help Kids Cope and I?ll Hold You and You?ll Hold Me.

?I wish I didn?t have a need for such an extensive collection,? she sighed.

One book in particular, When Dinosaurs Die: A Guide to Understanding Death, became an instant favorite with my daughter.

?Losing someone who is special to you is very hard to understand,? the book stated simply. And: ?When someone you love dies, there is no right or wrong way to feel.?

Every page depicted cartoon scenes of life and death: the burial of a pet, a sick parent, a car accident, a memorial service for the Grandpa dinosaur (?Morris Saurus.?)? There was even a cartoon panel with two little baby dinosaur ?preemies? hooked up to tubes and wires in little incubators.

?Just like the boys!? my daughter exclaimed, recognizing the NICU equipment even in dinosaur cartoons. We talked about how the boys were healthy now, but that they were very little and sick when they were born.

?We should give this book to Grandma,? she said one night after we read it for what seemed like the fortieth time. ?So she won?t be so sad about Grandpa.?

As I was leaving for the airport to attend the memorial, my daughter reminded me, ?Did you pack the dinosaur book for Grandma??

On the night after the funeral, friends and family came to the house to remember the man who had been uncle, brother, father, neighbor, and grandfather, among so many other roles. We cried. We laughed. We ordered pizza and watched Grandpa?s favorite movie, an obscure spaghetti Western.

The dinosaur book sat on an end table where it happened to catch the attention of some of the younger grandchildren. I watched as one by one, they nabbed the book, curled up in a corner and flipped slowly through various topics such as, ?Why Does Someone Die?? ?Feelings about Death,? and ?Ways to Remember Someone.? None of the children said anything to anyone. They just silently read through the book, each child leaving it on the table where he or she had found it.

The other day (for the purposes of writing this post), I pulled the book out again. When my daughter saw it, she wanted me to read it to her at bedtime. Afterwards, we played the game suggested on one of the last pages: ?I remember when??

?I remember when Grandpa came to visit and read books to you,? I began.

?I remember Grandpa?s birthday party,? she said.

?I remember the cards he used to make for us.?

We did a few more rounds of ?I remember when?? and then I kissed her and turned off the light.

I?m so sad to have lost my father-in-law. And it breaks my heart to know that my sons won?t know him as we knew him?the man who was my husband?s best man at our wedding, the man who sent thank-you candy to the boys? NICU nurses and read doll books to his granddaughter.

But while we are sad, we are also grateful that we have friends who recommend books to help us talk about what we?re feeling. We?re proud that our daughter?s sadness prompted her to empathize with Grandma. We?re tickled that a little thing like a book in the right place at the right time can remind us to share the happy memories of our loved ones. That?s the real message behind Chapter 9?that the tools we use to nurture happiness are the same ones we use to foster resilience.

Geek at Heart: walking for aerobics

I love walking.

That?s my aerobic exercise, walking. Adding aerobic exercise or ?cardio? to your workout routine has numerous health benefits including building endurance and strengthening your heart, reducing the risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure. Aerobic workouts also help you burn calories and lose weight. Other forms of aerobic exercise include but are not limited to jogging, running, cycling, swimming, and so on.

Aerobic exercise is physical exercise of relatively low intensity. You should be able to carry out short conversations while doing aerobic exercise. If you are having trouble getting enough air while you?re talking, you are most likely performing anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise is medium to high intensity exercise that concentrates on building strength, speed and power. In some cases anaerobic exercise occurs simultaneously with aerobic exercise.

I carry stress in the muscles surrounding and associated with my spine, when affected I get incredibly tense and painful. Sometimes I?ve had to start walking slow until the muscles start to relax and pick up speed as I go. No matter how I feel when I first start walking, I always feel great when I?m finished. I suggest cardio for at least 20 to 30 minutes three to five times a week.

Senators press for tax relief on principal reductions, short sales : TI ...

feature photo

By Jon Prior

A group of senators are pressing Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to allow a vote on a package of tax relief extensions set to expire this year, including one involving mortgage principal forgiven in loan modification or short sale.

Homeowners who receive a principal reduction or a short sale next year will be required to pay taxes on the debt forgiven if Congress does not extend the Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007. The law expires Dec. 31. Up to $2 million of reduced debt can be excluded from taxable income under an extender package to be introduced in the Senate early next week.

The Senate Finance Committee passed the Family and Business Tax Cut Certainty Act, which would extend the tax relief through 2013, by a 19-5 bipartisan vote earlier in the month. (Read a summary of the bill?here).

?It just depends on when Mr. Reid will schedule a vote on the package,? a Senate Republican aide said.

Democrats said they will make the push as well for the package to be passed when Congress reconvenes next month.

?These tax cuts will reassure families, help spur job growth and boost the economy,? Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the finance committee said after the package passed earlier in the month.

The extension for providing relief on the mortgage debt reductions could cost $1.3 billion in lost revenue, according to an analysis of the bill.

But Baucus added it was an example of what Congress needs to do in order to avoid a looming ?fiscal cliff? and solve a larger fight over extending the Bush era tax cuts for the rich.

Congress is also?considering several programs to reduce principal for the roughly 11 million borrowers who owe more on their mortgage than their house is worth. Those programs would be rendered even less effective if borrowers elect not to take the relief in order avoid paying taxes on the assistance.

The $25 billion settlement between the five largest mortgage servicers and the state attorneys general earlier this year will provide some principal reduction next year along with expanded incentives from the Home Affordable Modification Program.

Mortgage bond analysts at?JPMorgan Chase ($37.17 0%) expect roughly 650,000 short sales by the end of 2012, which may only increase as these types of liquidations become more popular.

Fannie Mae and?Freddie Mac will?ease rules beginning Nov. 1 to speed up the short sale process on the loans they guarantee, even for borrowers still current on their mortgage.

According to?Morgan Stanley ($14.56 0%) research, short sales took up a larger percentage of distressed sales than REO earlier in the year. (Click on the graph below to expand.)
