Not since The Incredibles, have we taken to an animated family as we did to ?The Croods?. God knows that it?s often hard to get a single character right, let alone an entire brood. However with this film, DreamWorks Animation has succeeded in making a film that?s got enough for the parents as it does for the kids, even though some of the ideas may feel recycled at times.
Eep (voiced by Emma Stone) is a cavegirl with an overprotective father Grug (Nicholas Cage). The Croods rarely venture out of their cave for fear of meeting an untimely end like other tribes they once knew (the family motto is ?Never not be afraid?). Apart from Eep and Grug, there?s Eep?s mother, her goofy brother, her wise-cracking gran and her baby sister. One day, Eep wanders out of the cave despite her father?s warnings, and runs into another caveboy, Guy (Ryan Reynolds). He shows her that he can make fire and warns her that their world is coming to an end. Eep tells her family this but Grug dismisses her warning. Soon after, the break up of Pangaea begins and Grug and the Croods are forced to seek Guy?s help to get to safer ground.
Eep proves to be a spunky heroine, with hair nowhere as pretty as Merida from ?Brave? but with ten times her spirit. Grug is good as the grumpy dad but it is Gran who gets the most laughs. Visually, the movie offers a variety of colourful and crazy landscapes. There are also plenty of engaging twists, save for the ending that feels too over-the-top even for an animated film.
?The Croods? may feel a little like a Flinstones-meets-Ice Age rehash but it?ll still leave you with a smile on your face.
